EATING AND DRINKING & NIGHTLIFE      

There's a wide choice of eating options in the city centre;  the areas around Kultorvet and along Studiestraede are loaded with great places to eat.  An almost uncharitable network of cafes and bars serving drinks and snacks covers Copenhagen.  The best are in or close to Indre By, and it's no hardship to sample several on the same night, though bear in mind that on Fridays and Saturdays you'll probably need to queue.

BRUNCHES, SNACKS AND FAST FOOD

AMOKKA, Dag Hammerskjolds Alle 38-40.
A coffee temple near Osterport station serving more varieties of coffee than you can imagine.  Also sells sandwiches, etc.  Outdoor seating in summer.

BANG & JENSEN, Istedgade 130.
Popular cafe at the quieter end of Istedgade, serving a renowned brunch until 4pm and sandwiches all day.

CAFE EUROPA, Amagertorv 1.
It's coffee is said to be the best in town, and it also sells fabulous cakes, sandwiches and light meals.
Outdoor seating on Stroget.

CAFE SOMMERSKO, Kronprinsensgade 6.
popular cafe, whose filling Sunday brunch  (veggie options available)  is particularly recommended.

DEN SORTE, Gryde, Istedgade 108.
Legendary huge burgers, but also good traditional Danish fare.

FRONT PAGE, Sortedams Dosseringen 21.
Overlooking one of the city's finest lakes, this is a perfect spot for a quiet coffee or beer and light snacks.

HUSETS CAFE, Radhusstraede 13.
Sandwich spot located in the Huset complex, which doubles as a jazz venue in the evenings,

LA GALETTE, Larsbjornstraede 9.
Authentic Breton pancakes made with organic buckwheat and an array of fillings - from smoked salmon to chocolate and chestnut mousse.

MORGENSTEDET, Langgade in Christiania.
Tasty and mostly organic vegan and vegetarian salads, snacks and meals at very affordable prices. 
No smoking.  No alcohol.
Closed:  Tuesdays.

PUSSY GALORE'S FLYING CIRCUS, Sankt Hans Torv 30.
Trendy brunch spot with outdoor seating on the square.  Brunch served till 4pm.  Also popular in the evening, when beer and wine take priority.

THE TACO SHOP, Norre Farimagsgade 57.
The best taco spot in town.  Take out only.

RESTAURANTS

ANKARA, Vesterbrogade 35.
Popular Turkish restaurant with an all-you-can-eat lunchtime buffet for 49kr, 69kr in the evening.

ATLAS BAR, Larsbjornstraede 18.
Eco-restaurant/cafe serving tasty Asian and South American dishes.  The portions are enormous, with main courses from 100kr.
Closed:  Sundays.

CIRCUS, Rosenvaengets Alle 7.
A trendy butcher-cum-hairdresser-cum-restaurant with French-inspired dishes.  Keep an eye out for the 1900 murials, depicting a cow's journey from the field to the butchers' shop.

DEN GRONNE KAELDER, Pilestraede 48.
A simple tiled-floor vegetarian eatery.
Closed:  Sundays.

DELICATESSEN, Vesterbrogade 120.
Cosy basement restaurant serving outstanding international dishes, tapas from 20kr a plate. 
Take out available.

HACKENBUSCH, Vesterbrogade 124.
Colourful cafe/bar with an inventive blackboard menu.

NYHAVNS FAERGEKRO, Nyhavn 5.
Slightly pricey, but the lunchtime fish-laden buffet  (89kr)  cannot be surpassed.
Outdoor seating in summer.

RIZRAZ, Kompagnistraede 20.
Excellent value Mediterranean food;  lunchtime buffet 49kr, 59kr in the evening.

SHEZAN, Viktoriagarde 22.
The first Pakistani restaurant in Copenhagen and still going strong.
Main courses from 50kr, with plenty of vegetarian dishes.

SPISELOPPEN, Christiania.
It's won culinary accolades, and hiked up its prices, but the Spiseloppen is still great and the portions generous.  Meals from 140kr.
Closed:  Mondays.

THAI ESAN, Lille Istedgade 7.
Bargain Thai food in a very popular restaurant.

BARS

BIBENDUM, Nansengade 24.
The city's hottest new winebar also serves tapas.

CAFE LUDVIGSEN, Sundevedsgade 2.
Vesterbro's most popular pool bar, complete with jukebox and inexpensive beer.  Crammed at weekends.

CHARLIE'S BAR, Pilestraede 33.
Award-winning Real Ale pub.

CAFE LOUISE, Norrebrogade 5.
This once traditional bar has become a legendary last stop after a big night out.  You have to ring a door bell to get in.
Open:  through to 4am daily, 9am at weekends.

DAN TURELL, Store Regnegade 3.
Something of an institution with the artier student crowd, this place is packed at weekends.
Open:  til 4 am.

DROP INN, Kompagnistraede 34.
Easy going and unpretentious place near Huset with live blues or rock almost every night. 
Cheap beer and late opening hours.

HVIIDS VINSTUE, Kongens Nytorv 19.
Old-fashioned bar with crowded rooms patrolled by uniformed waiters.
Outdoor seating in summer.

KULKAFEEN, Teglgardsstraede 5.
Cosy cafe that gets going in the evening and has live music on Saturday.

KRASNAPOLSKY, Vestergade 10.
Danish avant-garde art on the wall reflects the trend-setting reputation of this ultra-modern watering hole.
DJ's Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Tasty food too.

KRUT'S KARPORT, Oster Farrimagsgade 12.
Small and slightly run down but nonetheless very popular and one of the few bars selling absinthe.

THE MOOSE, Svaertegade 5.
Tiny-looking bar that stretches back into a spacious room with pool tables.
"Happy Hour"  9pm - 2am.

PEDAR HVITFELDT, P. Hvitfeldtsstraede 15.
Immensely popular spit-and-sawdust place.  Come early if you want a seat.

SEBASTOPOL, Sankt Hans Torv 2.
Trendy spot on the Sankt Hans Torv square that catches the last rays of sun and therefore gathers large crowds in summer.  Good brunches too.

SUPERGEJL, Norrebrogade 184.
New popular cafe/bar, especially among the younger crowd.
Funky DJ, Friday and Saturday.

UNIVERSITETSCAFEEN, Fiolstraede 2.
A prime location, long hours  (until 5am), outdoor seating in summer and live blues or rock every Thursday.

NIGHTLIFE
The city is pretty good place for live music.  Major international names visit regularly, and there are always plenty of minor gigs in cafes and bars, often free during the week.

For listings of what's on, pick up the free Nat & Dag or Gaffa, from cafes and music shops.  Clubs and discos are busy from midnight and 5am, with fairly easy-going dress codes;  drinks are seldom hiked-up and admission is fairly cheap  (from 40kr).

LIVE MUSIC, CLUBS AND DISCOS

BARCELONA, Faelledvej 21.
This swanky hangout is very much the place to be seen.  Friday and Saturday it's Bar'Cuda and becomes a sweaty cavern of funk and soul til 5am.  Free.

COPENHAGEN JAZZHOUSE, Niels Hemmingsensgade 10.
Laid-back jazz venue, followed by a jazz, funk or mainstream disco.

BARFLY, Britannia, Lovstraede 4.
A new multi-storey temple of entertainment.  The bottom half plays music from the 70's and 80's, the top two floors techno and mainstream pop.  Pool tables and pinball machines too.
Open:  Wednesday - Saturday til 5/6am.

DISTOTEK IN, Norregade 1.
Cavernous disco playing mainstream hits.  Entrance fee  (from 50kr)  includes free drinks all night.
Open:  Thursday til 6am, Friday and Saturday til 10am.

FEMOREN AND TIOREN, Amager.
Two open-air rock venues hosting local and international bands from June to August on the beach at Amager.
Bus #12 or #13.

JAZZHUSET VOGNPORTEN, Radhusstraede 13.
In the same building as Use-It, with regular live bands.
Open:  Monday - Thursday Be bop, Friday and Saturday jazz.

KLAPTRAEET, Kultorvet 11.
A cafe/bar during the week, at weekends it hosts DJ's with a dance floor out back.
Open:  til 5am.

LOPPEN, Badsmandsstraede 43, Christiania.
Regular rock, jazz and performance artists.  Discos follow live music events Friday and Saturday.
Open:  til 5am.

MOJO, Longangstraede 21.
Renowned jazz and blues evenings - live music every night.
Happy hour:  8pm - 10pm.

PARK CAFE, Osterbrogade 79.
Popular cafe/music venue.  Thursday - Saturday, it's home to Kitty Club, with mainstream disco upstairs, live music downstairs.

PUMPEHUSET, Studiestraede 52.
Venue for mainstream rock, hip-hop and funk from around the world.

RUST, Guldbergsgade 8.
Huge complex hosting rock bands on a main stage, and three dance floors playing everything from Break Beat to Latin jazz.
Closed:  Mondays.

SABOR LATINO, Vester Voldgade 85.
Popular Latin dance venue. 
Free Salsa lessons Thursday - Saturday 10pm - 11pm.

STENGADE, 30 Stengade 18.
Mixed bag of live music and dance events, and a popular hardcore metal venue.  Techno Thursdays.
Closed:  Mondays.

STEREO BAR, Linnesgade 16A.
Once-trendy bar that's mellowed with age, with a dance floor in the basement playing mostly House.
Open:  til 3am.

VEGA, Enghavevej 40.
A large multi-levelled centre with DJ's at Lille Vega and concerts at Store Vega. 
Plays House, Techno and Disco.  Over 20's only.
